It’s an extremely wide-ranging role that includes, interpreting lectures and tutorials in BSL, note taking and assisting students as they prepare for exams. Just as important though, you will develop a strong professional relationship with each student, giving them the motivation and confidence to fulfil their potential in their area of study. Excellent communication skills are a must, along with a real understanding of (and experience of working with) deaf and hearing impaired people. You should also have signing skills to at least BSL level 2. A qualification in Communication Support would be ideal.
