Environment Agency

Environment Agency
About us

Your environment is the air you breathe, the water you drink, the sea you swim in, the land you walk on and the ground that your home is built on – literally everything you need to enjoy a high quality of life. Working with businesses of all sizes, individual members of the public, community groups, industry, farmers, the Government and society as a whole, we are making your environment cleaner and healthier. With around 12,600 members of staff and a budget of around £1billion, we are the biggest organisation protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales.

We’ve already made great progress – we’ve been cutting pollution from industry for many years now so that smogs and acid rain are a thing of the past. Our rivers and bathing waters are cleaner now than they have been for 200 years. Right now one of our biggest concerns is our ever-changing climate – more extreme weather leads to a threat of serious flooding and widespread drought. Much of our wildlife remains under threat - new housing projects can result in damaging wildlife habitats, or strain water and energy supplies. As a country we accumulate far too much rubbish. These are just some of our concerns.

What we do

At our offices throughout England and Wales we carry out Government policy, inspect and regulate businesses, and react quickly when there’s an emergency such as a flood or pollution incident. Here is a summary of the areas we work in:

  • Flood risk

  • Improving air quality

  • Climate change

  • Conservation and ecology

  • Hazardous waste

  • Noise pollution

  • Water shortages and water quality
